What Is Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Why It Matters
Introduction
Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the variation in time intervals between consecutive heartbeats. Unlike resting heart rate, which measures beats per minute, HRV captures the subtle fluctuations between individual beats — and these variations carry significant health information.
A higher HRV generally reflects a well-functioning autonomic nervous system, while a lower HRV may indicate stress, fatigue, illness, or overtraining.
What this means
The heart does not beat with perfect regularity — even in healthy individuals, the intervals between beats vary slightly. This variation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system:
- Sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) — reduces HRV, increases heart rate
- Parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) — increases HRV, slows heart rate
When the body is well-recovered, parasympathetic tone tends to dominate, producing higher HRV. Under stress or during illness, sympathetic tone rises and HRV typically falls.
Why it matters
Research published through the NIH and Cleveland Clinic has linked lower HRV to increased risk of cardiac events, poorer recovery from exercise, and greater vulnerability to stress. Conversely, higher baseline HRV is associated with greater cardiovascular fitness and stress resilience.

- Mental stress — psychological stress reduces HRV through sympathetic nervous system activation
- Illness — infection typically lowers HRV, sometimes before other symptoms appear
- Age — HRV naturally declines with age; comparison against personal baseline is more useful than population averages
What to watch for
Rather than focusing on absolute HRV values, monitor trends relative to your personal baseline:
- A sustained drop in HRV over several days may suggest accumulated fatigue or developing illness
- Consistently low HRV despite adequate rest may reflect chronic stress or an underlying health issue
- Sudden drops following specific events (e.g., poor sleep, alcohol, intense exercise) are expected and typically transient
